Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs hauls in a pass in front of Denver Broncos defensive back Bradley Roby during the first half in an NFL preseason football game Saturday, Aug. Vikings: The Preseason No Bull Review. By sadaraine Mile High Report Aug 14, 2018, 9:00am EDT The Denver Broncos faced the Minnesota Vikings for their first real football action.
Cousins completed all four of his passes in the Vikings’ 42-28 exhibition victory Saturday night, including a 1-yard touchdown strike on a quick slant to Stefon Diggs .
’I think it was a smooth first drive but it is a small sample size and the next couple of weeks will be a good test for us,’ Cousins said.
Diggs called it a good first step.
’He’s a good quarterback,’ Diggs said. ’He makes some great throws.’
Case Keenum wasn’t nearly as sharp in his Denver debut, completing just 1 of 4 passes for 5 yards spanning two drives.
’It’s just frustrating not playing well and you don’t have a chance to bounce back from it,’ Keenum said.
Cousins was the crown jewel of this year’s free-agent class of quarterbacks, signing an $84 million, three-year deal in Minneapolis. That meant Keenum was out two months after leading the Vikings to the NFC championship, and he signed a $36 million, two-year deal with Denver.
The Broncos then traded their starter, Trevor Siemian, to the Vikings to serve as Cousins’ backup -- so long as he beats out Kyle Sloter, another former Denver QB.
That left Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly vying for No. 2 duty in Denver.
So, this preseason opener was filled with quarterback intrigue.
After Cousins’ single series -- one in which he didn’t have to face Von Miller -- Siemian led Minnesota on three scoring drives, most notably a screen pass to Roc Thomas that beat the blitz for a 78-yard score .
Siemian was 11 of 17 for 165 yards, two TDs and an interception against his old team.
’It was a little weird for sure, but good to see old buddies,’ Siemian said.
Lynch, the former first-rounder twice beaten out by Siemian in Denver, was just 6 of 11 for 24 yards and an interception.
’Obviously I’m upset,’ he said.
Despite 17 yards passing overall in the first half, the Broncos only trailed 24-14 at halftime thanks to Isaiah McKenzie’s 78-yard punt return for a TD and rookie Royce Freeman’s 23-yard TD scamper -- Denver’s only first down before halftime.
Just when the crowd was starting to lament losing Siemian and Sloter, in came Kelly to fire up the crowd.
Kelly threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt LaCosse. Amid chants of ’Kelly! Kelly!’ he also drove Denver 85 yards in 11 plays, capping the drive with a 19-yard strike to running back Phillip Lindsay to put the Broncos on top 28-27 with 10 minutes remaining.
Sloter, who was cut by Denver a year ago, responded by throwing a 9-yard touchdown pass to Chad Beebe with six minutes left to put the Vikings back on top. His strike to Jeff Badet for the 2-point conversion made it 35-28.
Safety Jack Tocho picked off Kelly at the Denver 30-yard line with 5:23 left, and Sloter sealed it with a 14-yard bootleg for the score.
Sloter was 9 of 11 for 69 yards and Kelly was 14 of 20 for 176.
Lynch might be losing in his battle to be the backup, but he insisted he’s ’excited for Chad.’
’Chad’s been playing really well and he deserves that,’ Lynch said. ’He’s a good kid.’
Broncos coach Vance Joseph wasn’t quite ready to elevate Kelly to No. 2 QB, saying he had to study the film.
’Obviously, Case is the starter, so that’s my main concern,’ Joseph said. ’Chad has played well. He played well tonight, outside of the one interception, which led to a score for those guys. He’s a guy that plays with a lot of confidence. That’s a good deal.’
MCKENZIE MAGIC
Joseph’s faith in McKenzie finally paid off with his punt return for a score.
’Huge for him,’ said Joseph, who stuck with McKenzie last year despite a half-dozen fumbles. ’He’s obviously a talent. His issue last year wasn’t talent. It was more decision-making. We’re helping him fix that so he can help us win games.’
NATIONAL ANTHEM
Linebacker Brandon Marshall and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas weren’t with their teammates on the sideline for the national anthem. They emerged from the tunnel behind the Broncos’ bench after the anthem was over.
’We didn’t know about that,’ Joseph said. ’But it’s their right.’
INJURIES
Broncos S Jamal Carter (hamstring), CB Marcus Rios (hip) and TE Austin Traylor (right shoulder) got hurt.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tim Tebow’s first two series had rookie written all over them. Then he started playing with the veteran-like poise that helped him get drafted in the first round by Denver in the first place.
Tebow outplayed Minnesota’s Tarvaris Jackson in the backup quarterback comparison, but the Vikings forced four first-half turnovers and beat the Broncos 31-24 on Thursday night in the preseason finale for both teams.
Tebow fumbled his first snap, Erin Henderson found the ball and scooted into the end zone from 35 yards out for the Vikings. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida then threw a wobbler over the middle that Tyrell Johnson easily intercepted and returned for 41 yards to set up a field goal.
’The turnovers in this league will kill you,’ Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said. ’We know that and he does, too.’
Alberta gaming forms canada. Minnesota’s defense also stopped four of five fourth-down attempts by Denver, including an overthrow by Tebow out of bounds from the Vikings 37 late in the third quarter to give the home team the ball back.
Marquez Branson and Bruce Hall lost fumbles on Denver’s next two drives, and Minnesota led 17-7 at halftime despite a meager 54 yards of offense and a weak, out-of-order performance by Jackson and the second-stringers.
Tebow, though, found a rhythm in the second quarter and -- despite the turnovers and some carelessness with the ball as he scrambled around in the backfield -- finished 12 for 16 for 167 yards and one touchdown.
’I try to have a short memory and move on and just keep playing,’ Tebow said.
His favorite target was Matthew Willis, who caught five passes for 122 yards and a score.Preseason Vikings Vs Broncos Score
’Tim is obviously a competitor. He’s a winner,’ said fellow rookie Eric Decker, a Minnesota native. ’He just tried to settle the guys down and say, ’Hey, you know what? Forget about what happened. Let’s focus on the next play. Let’s execute. Take care of your responsibilities.’ And he took leadership in the huddle.’
Decker had 10 catches for 114 yards for Denver.
’Home sweet home,’ he said.
Tebow also had 21 yards rushing on four attempts, giving the Broncos plenty to consider in their decision about whether to use him or Brady Quinn as the primary backup to Kyle Orton. Orton played two series and led Denver to a touchdown run by LenDale White, who later left the game because of an ankle injury.
The drive included soft coverage by Lito Sheppard on a first-down catch by Brandon Lloyd and a pass interference penalty on Asher Allen. Sheppard and Allen are competing for a starting cornerback spot, with incumbent Cedric Griffin and rookie Chris Cook recovering from injuries for the Vikings.
Vikings coach Brad Childress declined to name the starter, or reveal a prognosis for Cook.
’We don’t ever give those guys timetables. Everybody heals differently,’ he said.
All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady saw his first action for the Broncos, a major step in his recovery from a knee injury he sustained in April, but he looked slow and was beaten badly a few times by Brian Robison on the pass rush. Starting right tackle Ryan Harris, who grew up in St. Paul, hurt his ankle and didn’t return.
Correll Buckhalter also made his preseason debut for Denver in the backfield, catching a pair of passes for 26 yards to give the Broncos another sign of progressive health following a training camp that seemed to revolve around the training room.
The Vikings, who have just one week to get ready for their Sept. 9 season opener at defending champion New Orleans, held out 20 of their 22 starters. Brett Favre watched in one of his favorite outfits -- hat, T-shirt, shorts, sneakers -- and saw Jackson struggle.
Though tight ends Jeff Dugan and Garrett Mills dropped wide-open passes on the first possession, Jackson finished 2 for 8 for 2 yards, against a mix of first and second team defense by the Broncos. In four preseason games, Jackson went 12 for 26 for 60 yards. Though the fans could easily have been targeting the entire offense on an ugly night, Jackson heard boos a few times as he jogged off the field following a failed third down.
’Regardless of the situation, regardless of why they’re booing .. I can’t do nothing about it,’ Jackson said.
Asked if the booing bothers him, Jackson said: ’It got to a point now where I don’t even care.’Preseason Vikings Vs Broncos History
He’s still in the No. 2 spot, though. Childress has not wavered with that.
’I’ve seen a lot of him throughout training camp, and I kind of know where he’s at,’ the coach said.Vikings Versus Broncos
Vikings rookie Joe Webb, however, had a much better night. Cheered as he took the field in the third quarter, the sixth-round draft pick went 5 for 9 for 100 yards, a touchdown and an ill-advised interception. He also took off for a 41-yard carry, and his first completion -- 14 yards -- was longer than the yardage from Jackson and Sage Rosenfels combined.Preseason Vikings Vs Broncos Highlights
Webb’s pass was picked off by Alphonso Smith, but Webb ran him down and saved a touchdown with a hard tackle, forcing Smith to limp off the field for a second time in the game. Smith later lost a shoe and fell down during a 62-yard touchdown pass from Webb to Javon Walker. The Vikings have a dilemma this weekend, whether to keep four quarterbacks on the roster or try to sneak Webb through waivers and onto to the practice squad.
’It’d be hard to keep four and not keep another good football player on the roster,’ Childress said.Broncos Against The Vikings
Said Webb: ’It’s tough. A lot of guys can’t sleep enough.’
